Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) during the early phase of hemorrhagic shock (HS) contributes to acute kidney injury (AKI). Erythropoietin (EPO) has been shown to be protective in a number of conditions, and its administration during IRI has been shown to have renoprotective effect in AKI. We have studied the role of EPO in modulating IR injury to the kidneys in vivo and in vitro in different experimental models. In both HS (50%) and IR models, EPO significantly reduced the levels of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen compared with those in the untreated animals. In cultured tubular epithelial cells (LLC-PK1), exposure to hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) led to significant increases in the expression of NF-kappaB, inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and MCP-1, and apoptotic cells. Incubation of LLC-PK1 cells with EPO significantly decreased the expression of NF-kappaB, TNF-alpha, IL-6, and MCP-1, and increased the number of viable cells. In addition, EPO treatment ameliorated the H/R-induced cell injury by decreasing NF-kappaB activation, apoptosis, and IL-6, TNF-alpha, and MCP-1 expression. These results suggest that EPO plays a role in protecting against HS-induced AKI. In addition, the renoprotective effect of EPO is associated with its antiinflammatory and antiapoptotic effects.//

A man walking his dogs was approached by the suspect, who was armed with a knife and a golf club, according to the statement. The suspect used the golf club to strike the victim on the head, at which point the victim’s dog began biting the suspect on the leg. The suspect then attacked the victim with the knife, which he then wielded at the victim’s face, neck and back. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect fled on foot.
Although the suspect was described as black, detectives said in a statement Friday that witnesses have provided a possible lead.
